Frost dove forwards as her stomach betrayed her once again. Hurling every speck of food she had eaten that morning just like she had done for three days in a row. Aurora sighed as she grabbed a wet rag and held it out for Frost after she had finished vomiting.

Red stood in the doorway and sighed. “Not to make light of your current condition Frost but we have to meet with the Senate today. We have put it off for nearly a week now.”

Aurora grunted and crossed her arms looking at Red. “She is sick Red she can’t help it.”

Red held up his hands “I know I know but if we don’t do something then the Senate will refuse to see us just to prove a point.”

Frost coughed gently. “You two go. I will stay here till we can figure out what’s wrong with me.”

A chuckle came from the bedroom as all three of them turned to see Dr. Saint with a medical bag and the president at his side. “I would venture to say my dear that you have a bad case of morning sickness.”

Aurora growled marching forwards getting nose to nose with Dr. Saint making the small man flinch slightly as she glared down at him. “push your luck with me any more and I’ll have a new scratching post.”

The president stepped between them. “Ok children play nice. But Red is right at least one of you needs to make an appearance at the Senate today. I brought Dr Saint here to have a look at miss Frost and make sure she is OK.”

Aurora glared at the president before looking away. “Guys group meeting real quick.” She said leading Red into the bathroom. Closing the door behind her she sighed looking at Red “alright what are you thinking?”

Red sighed rubbing his temples. “ I don’t know. We have to make an appearance today of some kind. But we don’t need to leave frost here alone in her condition.”

Aurora nodded as Frost looked up from her spot on the floor. “Are you going to be alright alone before the Senate?” she looked up at Red smiling weakly.

Red grinned his fangs slowly poking out as his eyes burned a little brighter. “you question me? Red the crimson reaper arc angel? Leader of men into battle slayer of armies.”

Aurora cocked a brow as she stood up. “ be safe and don’t do anything I would ever have a reason to question you over. And by the way.” She leaned up kissing his cheek “I question you every day now go you big lug.”

Red snickered and nodded walking out of the bathroom without another word. Sighing Aurora helped Frost to her feet. The fox had taken to just wearing a very short tank top and apair of shorts to stay cool. Walking back into the bedroom they both found Dr Saint laying out some equipment as another person rolled in what Aurora recognized as a portable sonogram machine.

Furrowing her brow Aurora stepped forwards. “You are not going to be running pointless tests on her for your so called research.”

Dr Saint grumbled softly. “You should have met Aurora she was just like you. Hard headed idealist”

Aurora raised a brow as Frost gently placed a hand on her arm. “Its ok I will let you know if I think he is being too rough.”

Huffing Aurora sat back as Dr Saint nodded patting the bed. “Lay down and let’s get a look at your little bun in the oven.” Frost nodded laying down as the machine turned on and Dr Saint slowly ran the sensor over her stomach. “Ok let’s see here… adjust it a little for your fur here aaand….” The screen froze at the touch of a button two small circles showing on the monitor. “well well looks like someone is having twins.”

Frost blinked slowly looking at the monitor then at Aurora. “Twins?” she breathed out reaching over and grabbing auroras arm “can you tell if they are boys or girls?”

Dr Saint was busy looking at the monitor as he shook his head slowly. “You aren’t far enough along just yet. By human standards you are… about two months maybe a hair more. Don’t know how that translates for your kind. Now if you don’t mind.” He pulled out a needle and several glass tubes.

Aurora glared as she shook her head. “One is more than enough for any pregnancy related test you could possibly run.”

Dr Saints brow furrowed as he reached over and pulled a single vial of blood. Sticking it in his bag he slowly closed up everything. “For now I would simply suggest that you take it easy. Avoid anything stressful as much as you possibly can.”

Frost nodded as she put both hands over her stomach and looked down. Aurora escorted Dr Saint out quietly before walking back over and sat down on the edge of the bed next to Frost. She reached over and gently laid a hand on top of hers.

Frost stayed still for a very long time never moving beyond the slow rise and fall of her chest. Aurora climbed over onto the bed and slowly pulled Frost up into her lap. Gently stroking her hair Aurora sighed softly. Moving frost seemed to finally wake her from her stupor as she slowly began clinging tighter and tighter to auroras shirt curling up in a ball like a frightened kit.

Aurora leaned down and kissed the top of Frosts head gently. “Shhhhh it’s gonna be OK.” Frost buried her head into auroras stomach whimpering and shaking. Feeling the cool wetness of tears against her fur Aurora tried her best to comfort her friend. “Sugar what’s wrong?”

Frost shook her head keeping it hidden as she continued to sob softly. Finally Aurora gripped her shoulders and slowly raised her up. “Come on now you can’t lie to me. What’s bothering you?”

Frost wiped away the tears as she looked down at her stomach. “What if I’m like them?”

Aurora cocked her head to the side trying to figure out what she meant. Then it finally clicked and she grabbed Frost none too gently by the muzzle lifting her head up. “You listen to me. You are nothing like those bastards that abandoned you. You will be a good mother and I will help you. I just wish your parents could see what they missed out on.” Stroking frosts face Aurora sighed softly.

Frost shook her head leaning into Auroras hand. “That’s the thing Aurora. I did find them.”

Aurora blinked and looked down at Frost for several long seconds as her mind processed what Frost had just told her. “What do you mean you found them…”

Frost shrugged as she curled up tightly against Aurora. “It was maybe six months or so after I got my vision. I was still hanging around Vail trying to adapt to my new life. And the traders festival came to town. So naturally I decided to ask around and see if I could find my parents.”

Curling up even tighter she took a gasping ragged breath. “About a week later I found them. They looked so happy too. They where herb traders set up near the square. They where just two normal foxes red fur amber eyes. They just looked so normal. And they had these two little kits running around and playing I can’t tell you how envious I was of those two.”

Aurora bristled at the thought of these two as she kept rubbing Frosts head trying to stay calm. “well I went up to them and they were super friendly very nice and outspoken. At least they where until I told them who I was. They told me to leave… and when I didn’t they yelled for the sheriff at the time saying I tried to steal from them. The sheriff took me away and held me over night. When I got out in the morning they where gone like they had never even been there. I didn’t even know their names…”

Aurora was audibly growling by now. Taking a long slow breath she wrapped her arms and tail around Frost. “Don’t worry sugar they don’t deserve you.”

Frost laughed softly. “Im just scared Aurora. I want to be there for my kits, and I sure don’t want to be like my parents. But there is a part of me that just bothers me and I….”

Aurora put one finger over Frosts mouth cutting her off. “Frost ever since I met you, you have been a good and honest person who loves everyone. I have no doubt that you will be an excellent mother.”

Frost giggled softly. “The first time I met you I had just tried to steal your packs.”

Aurora shrugged and grinned. “And if you hadn’t done that Blake wouldn’t have gotten hurt, we would not have ended up in Vail for all that time, I wouldn’t be a Kanaima and none of us would be friends. Everything happens for a reason. Your parents abandoning you happened for a reason, though you may not be able to see or understand it yet.”

Frost took a deep breath and nodded as she looked at her stomach again. “God I’m gonna be huge.”

Aurora giggled and helped Frost up off the bed. “Come on let’s see if we can’t find you something to eat that you can hold down.”

The day slowly progressed on from there. They discovered that Frost pretty well solely craves fish and blueberries and it was all she could keep down. Dr Saint had returned a little after lunch with the test results. The only thing they could find wrong was her blood pressure which was very high even for a Kanaima. It was agreed that Frost would have to take it as easy as possible for a while until her body adjusted.

Finally around four in the afternoon Aurora was sitting alone in one of the living rooms with her nose stuck in one of the old novels that where scattered throughout the manor. When a crashing BOOM came from the far end of the hallway. Aurora jumped up pulling out the handgun she had strapped to her leg and gently eased around the corner.

Red was standing at the end of the hallway holding half of a door in his hand with more than a dozen men all pointing guns at him down the hall. Dropping the door red grunted raising his hands. “Sorry everyone it’s just me.” The guards slowly eased down and Red  still fuming headed down the hallway.

Holstering her gun Aurora followed close on Reds heels into his room. Catching the door before he slammed it Aurora huffed softly. “I take it the Senate meeting was not very productive.”

Red nodded walking over to a small fridge in his room. Pulling out a bottle of whiskey he flopped down in a chair. “If I wanted a reminder of my exploits in the past I’d read a history book.” He grumbled taking a hefty drink.

Smiling a little Aurora walked over and grabbed the bottle from him. Setting it down on the table she slowly climbed up straddling his lap. “Relax Red you can talk to me about it”

Red smirked and wrapped his arms around Auroras waist pulling her closer. “Now see there is a problem with that. If you sit here like this nothing in my body is going to relax.”

Aurora smirked and shrugged. “not my problem I’m just trying to help. Anyways. So what about your past did they bring up that was so terrible?”

Red snorted softly and shook his head. “pretty well everything. From the time I was created to the end of the Kanaima war.”

Aurora nodded slowly as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Well why don’t you tell me about it? I know your story has been less than consistent over time.”

Red snorted and leaned up nuzzling into auroras neck. “I really would prefer not to right now.” He breathed out making Aurora shudder. His fingers tightened on her hips slowly pulling her closer.

Biting her lip Aurora smiled back at him then jumped up quickly out of her seat. “Well then I guess we are just gonna have to skip all the fun too then.” She walked over and sat across from red on a love seat.

Reds brow furrowed as he huffed then looked away. “Whats to tell I was an arc angel of the Kanaima war and I’ve been a trader ever since.”

Aurora cocked a brow and crossed her legs putting her hands in her lap. “Well first off I did a little digging. With the exception of me and two others all arc angels were created during WWIII. Secondly, this thing.” She tapped the handgun on her side. “Is a custom made Barrett handgun. They only made about a dozen of them and only six where chambered in the .55 caliber. All of those where carried by a group called the Shadow Squad. And they where the original Kanaima. So tell me the truth.”

Red groaned rubbing his head as he took another drink. “What do you want to know then”

Aurora smiled and shrugged. “I just want the truth Red. Who you are both good and bad.”

Red sighed as he looked down at the bottle in his hand. “None of what I say gets repeated to anyone unless I tell you it’s OK.” Aurora nodded as she leaned up in the corner of her chair getting comphy.

“First off my name isnt really Red. It’s Roland, Roland Booker. I only took on the name Red after the end of the Kanaima war so I could live a normal life. And you are right about the origins of the gun I was a member of the original Shadow Squadron.” Reaching up to his wrist he pushed the fur on his wrist back, moving his hand along the fur so it showed the skin underneath was tattooed the number 2 in black ink.

“I was a pretty normal guy before WWIII I lived outside of Billings Montana and I was part of a private security team that handled and transported top secret private research. And through a very long series of events I met Vlad Korbachef. The world knows him as Zero the first successful Kanaima.” Taking a breath Red reached down and rubbed his knee.

“When the Chinese invaded I was part of the team that defended the lab holding Zero and Sigurd. I took a grenade to the leg. I lost everything below my knee and I was paralyzed. Sigurd offered me the chance to join Zero and another Kanaima called Gato. Naturally I accepted because well I wanted to be able to walk again.” Looking up at Aurora he smirked a little.

“It was just the three of us for oh I dunno maybe four or five months. Just test after test after test. And mind you back then Sigurd had no idea how much of his serum to give us. So we where also getting injections continually. Finally we started adding more members. Flash was the next guy to join us. He was a king cheetah as I remember, fast as hell. Then Sarah came along. At that point our five man crew began running missions in South America. We could hide in the jungle and strike as we saw fit. And it all worked great for a while.”

Aurora nodded as she scooted up closer. “So what changed?”

Red sighed heavily rubbing the back of his head. “Flash lost it. Over time repeated injections of the serum cause mental deterioration. Flash got more than the rest of us because he wasn’t very strong and they where trying to bulk him up. Now understand also that you can’t blame Sigurd or anyone else because no one knew better. Never the less, Flash snapped and went nuts. Killed a bunch of civilians and soldiers alike. He only stopped when I put a bullet in his head.”

“After that we went off the grid for a while and we where all re evaluated for combat effectiveness. But the military was desperate for more power so they released us. Not long after more and more Kanaima began to arise. The four of us trained them all and we eventually added a fifth man again. His name was ghost and he was an incredible recon man. Well the war drug on and finally after some ten thousand Kanaima where made we won.”

Aurora nodded as she was nearly on the edge of her seat now. “ After that things where pretty peaceful for me. Sarah and I settled down outside of what use to be Yellowstone park. We had a good life free of trouble up until about a year before the Kanaima war.” Red looked down frowning bitterly. “It was a pointless war that should have never happened.”

Cocking her head Aurora looked at him puzzled. “I thought it was caused by racial tensions between Kanaima and humans.”

Red shook his head and huffed. “No, it had to do with the creation of Kanaima. See back then anyone who had the money could become a Kanaima it wasn’t restricted. So it became a sort of fad thing to do. Soon though the Kanaima population exploded and people wanted it to end. So they started creating all these lies and propaganda saying we where evil and unnatural. Then came the regulations on changing people, who could be changed when and why.”

Taking a deep breath red took another log swig of his whiskey. “Well that didn’t work. Then came the riots. Lynching and beating Kanaima to death because of what we where. We where a threat to human existence as some saw it. Calling the Kanaima war a war caused by race is like calling a nuclear bomb a fire cracker. People wanted us dead, and the worst part was many Kanaima agreed. Those especially who had been changed post war wanted to change back they wanted something Sigurd and the other scientists just couldn’t offer.”

“Sarah and I got involved after one of our close friends was nearly beaten to death. We tried to quell the fighting at first but it blew up into an all out civil war. Most Kanaima where living on the western half of the country at the time so it was kind of natural that we defend it. Well then the federation stepped in said we where inciting civil unrest. Next thing we all know we are getting hammered by federation bombers.”

“That was when St. Louis was raised along with several other large cities that where predominantly Kanaima. We where on our heels when the armies marched in. It was only due to Sarah and the others defending the pass that their lives that we where able to rally and eventually win….” Red trailed off as he seemed to get lost in thought. “Sarah and I had tried having a kit of our own for years with no luck. I didn’t find out till after she died that she was two months pregnant.”

Red pulled out a small leather band Aurora had never seen before. It was a simple braided arm band with a sapphire set in the middle. Holding it up Red smiled bitterly. “I swore on her grave I would never fight in another war. That I would do everything in my power to protect others from her fate. I buried my gun with her as a sign of my resolve. But here we are again on the brink of another war and I fear there is nothing I can do to stop it.”

Aurora walked over and wrapped Red up in a hug squeezing him tightly. “I won’t let your vow go unfulfilled, and I will do everything I can to make sure no one else has to die in the name of peace. We will get this trade city built and we will keep everyone from fighting.”

Red nodded with a sigh as he slowly wrapped his arms around Auroras waist purring softly. “I swear you and Sarah had to of been related you look the same act the same.”

Aurora smiled as she slid back down sitting in Reds lap. Resting her chin on his shoulder she purred softly as her body slowly melted in against his. Red chuckled and rubbed her back. “Its late and you need to go to the Senate with me tomorrow.”

Blinking Aurora looked over at the clock with a soft groan at the 10:38AM staring back at her. Red snickered gently as he picked her up and carried her to her bedroom like a child. Sitting her down on her bed Aurora slowly wormed her way under the covers as red turned out the lights. “Hey Red”

Red turned and looked at her. “Yes Aurora?”

She smiled at him as she slowly sank down into the comfort of sleep. “Thank you” she said as the world slowly dimmed to black around her.
